How to Spruce Up Your Dining Room for Thanksgiving

Great news! It’s that time again — the most magical time of the year! Well… for foodies, that is.

That’s right, it’s almost Thanksgiving. And whether you celebrate with family, friends, or a mixture of both, one thing’s for sure — if you’re hosting, you may be already starting to sweat.

As a Thanksgiving host, there’s so much to think about: meals that take all day to cook and coordinate, special diets to consider, cleaning the house, having entertainment ready, and, of course, making that dining room look just as special as your grandma’s famous stuffing.

So, what goes into making a dining room look special? Well, in short, lots of things! You don’t necessarily have to paint or make major transformations. Little touches here and there can make a world of difference, turning your dining room from mundane to magnificent. Here are some of our favorite tricks:

Allow the architectural details of your home to guide you.

Does your dining room feature any interesting design details? Arched doorways, awesome windows, unique wall treatments, stunning chandeliers, and other elements can be used to inspire your decor, making a wonderfully cohesive look. Although we don’t condemn mixing and matching design elements, complementing these design details will maximize the character of your dining room. Try finding napkins or table runners that match your walls, mirrors or artwork mimicking the curvature of your archways, or glass cabinets that compliment your windows. No matter what elements you draw upon, you’ll create a strong, unified design theme.

Quick-Tip Ideas:

  • Find napkin rings that match the color of your walls or the material of details in the room, like stainless steel that mimics cabinet drawer handles or light blue to match the wall color.
  • Add round placemats to your table setting to echo arched doorways or circular windows.
  • Use runners the same color or material as your drapes or window dressings, like woven natural materials to match bamboo blinds.

Don’t shy away from bright palettes!

It can be tempting to think ‘formal’ when decorating your dining room. But, let’s face it, this isn’t your grandma’s place settings! People are ditching formalities in favor of comfort and expression. So, that being said, feel free to make your dining room truly you! If you’re interested in experimenting with bright hues, look for dramatic table settings — brightly-colored runners, eye-popping centerpieces, and colorful dishes are all on the table!

Bad jokes aside, you can introduce colorful elements to the perimeter of the room as well. They’ll feel especially prominent if you have white or neutral-colored walls, really making those accent colors pop. Try finding a large piece of art that really jumps off the wall, or a delightfully cheerful hutch or buffet table. Or if you want to go wild while also being a bit more demure, go for brightly colored serving trays and utensils.

Quick-Tip Ideas:

  • Serve up your feast in brightly colored bowls and plates. You don’t need to find a matching set either! Play around with colors that look dynamic together.
  • If you have neutral place settings like plates, go for brightly colored wine glasses or place mats.
  • Using bright vases in the middle of the table with fun floral arrangements can be a quirky way to add color without getting new place settings.

Mix and match fun chairs.

Odds are, if you’re hosting a large gathering, you’re gonna run out of matching chairs anyway. Don’t be embarrassed, embrace the look! In fact, find chairs that are dramatically different from one another in color and style. Like we said earlier — forget the formalities! It’s time to get playful. A series of mismatched chairs will steal the show this Thanksgiving. Just be sure to compliment the colors by adding a few matching pops of color around the room.

Quick-Tip Ideas:

  • If you’re using a lot of different types of chairs, try not to place two of the same types together. And remember: those outdoor chairs you’ve just put away can fit into an interior table setting.
  • If you’re only adding 2 to 4 different chairs to your current setting, use them at the ends of the table.

Speaking of fun seating, try a rustic bench.

Not ready for mismatched chairs or bright colors? That’s fine! If you want to add some major character to your seating, try finding yourself a rustic bench instead! Benches can bring a ton of charm to your dining room without being quite so wacky. Not only are they unique and charismatic, but they can maximize seating, too! Sounds like a win-win. Just make sure everyone crammed onto the bench likes each other.

Quick-Tip Ideas:

  • Use a bench or stool seating on one side of the table together if you just need a few extra seats.
  • Again, remember that an outdoor bench works perfectly indoors!

Get that statement centerpiece!

The easiest way to spruce up your dining room in a hurry is to find or pull together a dramatic centerpiece. Candles, vases, flowers, and greenery are classics, but be open to all possibilities! There’s no written rule about what a centerpiece has to be, so head to your local Turn Style and start imagining how you could transform your dining room table. Don’t be afraid to mix different types of candles and decorations to create that one-of-a-kind look.

Quick-Tip Ideas:

  • Who says a floral centerpiece needs to be cut flowers? Use some of your favorite potted plants instead!
  • Fun decor items like books and figurines can spruce up your table in a really fun way.
  • Tapered candles are back! So go ahead — add grandma’s candelabra to the center of your table.

How are you feeling after reading that feast of knowledge? Hopefully not sleepy, because you’ve got some shopping to do! Take these tips with you and head to Turn Style where you never know what you’re gonna find. With so much great inventory waiting to be discovered, you’re definitely going to be able to spruce up your dining room, just in time for the holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Turn Style 🦃
