5 Tips for Creating Airy Interior Design Spaces

If you’re like us, you’re feeling ready to start the spring cleaning process! As the weather begins to hint at warming up and we start to shed layers one by one, we look for ways to lighten up the heavy winter layers within our homes, too. The upcoming season may inspire you to create light and airy spaces in your home.

What Does It Mean for a Space To Be Light and Airy?

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of light and airy spaces? Ultra-light shades on the walls? Soft, fluffy furniture? Subtle patterns, if any? If any of these interior design ideas came to mind when you thought “light and airy,” you’re right!

Any design concept that isn’t full of heavy materials, colors, busy patterns and other “chaotic” concepts could be considered a light and airy space. If this interior design style sounds appealing to you as you kick off your spring cleaning, you’re in luck!

Tips for Creating Airy Interior Design Spaces

Step 1: Declutter

When it comes to light and airy spaces, less is more! There’s nothing light about clutter, so start the process by getting rid of everything that you’ve forgotten about or that no longer brings you joy. Think old magazines, tchotchkes, ratty furniture or rugs, dead plants, etc.

Step 2: Rearrange

Whether you believe in feng shui or not, there’s a lot to be said about the power of rearranging your furniture. An airy interior design space usually has plenty of room to walk and move around in. If your space allows, back furniture into the walls to maximize floor space. Keep bulkier pieces of furniture to a minimum, or at least style the bigger pieces away from each other.

Step 3: Rethink Paint Colors

Light and airy spaces don’t typically come in dark maroons or bright greens. That being said, there are plenty of ways you can still get creative with lighter paint shades. Explore muted pastels, subtly patterned wallpaper, or even an accent wall if you don’t fully want to give up vibrant colors.

Step 4: Consider Fabric

When it comes to fabrics for your furniture, curtains and other types of home upholstery, opt for materials like linen and cotton to complement your light and airy spaces. These materials quite often literally are light in color and weight. Velvets and heavier polyester fabrics can add heaviness to a room quickly.

Step 5: Let Air In

A somewhat obvious way to make your space more light and airy is to physically let more air in! If the outside temperatures permit, crack open your windows! Even turning on a ceiling or floor fan can make your home feel a little more refreshed and a lot less stuffy.
